Chapter Twenty

Mia ran into the plaza, looking everywhere for Garrett. She spotted Priscilla and Katya in the distance and made her way towards them.

“Mia? What are you doing here?” Priscilla asked when she spotted her.

“Garrett invited me,” Mia said.

“You, personally?” Katya asked in awe.

“Yeah… why?” Mia grabbed the strap of her purse.

Katya shrugged at her, looking away towards the rest of the crowd. Priscilla’s eyes landed on Mia’s necklace, seeing the ring in place of the heart charm.

“Wherever did you get this?” she asked, picking it up and inspecting it. “Is this Garrett’s daylight charm?”

“Yeah, he loaned it to me for the day,” Mia said, taking it out of Priscilla’s hand.

“Why would he do something like that?” Priscilla asked.

“He felt sorry for me,” Mia said, looking around the crowd again for Garrett. “Have either of you seen him?”

“Nope,” Katya responded, looking away at the rest of the celebration.

“He is most likely in the center of this horrendous crowd,” Priscilla said, rubbing her forehead. “He will be entertaining his flock of women, no doubt.”

“And hating every second of it, I’m sure,” Mia said, receiving a raised eyebrow from Priscilla. “Thanks!”

She ran off towards the middle of the square, searching for a group of people crowded around something. Sure enough, there he was, right at the center of a crowd of women. They all seemed to be doing a horrible job of flirting with him, while he looked like he was in pain at the attention.

“Garrett!” Mia called out, waving at him.

He looked over, and a flash of relief crossed his face when he saw who was calling his name. He bid the ladies farewell and walked towards Mia. The women all seemed to glare at her as he approached.

“I can’t begin to thank you enough for dragging me away from them,” he said.

Mia giggled. “It was nothing really.”

“It’s the part I dread most every time we have a celebration like this.”

“Why do you show up, then?”

“I’m a descendant,” he said with a wink, “of the town founder. Not to mention, I’m the mayor. I’m required to be here.”

“Ah. Sounds like a load of bull to me.”

“It is. But never mind that. How was your day?” he asked, intertwining his arm with hers and leading her through the crowd of people. “I haven’t heard of any mishaps, so I’m assuming all went well?”

She told him all about her day, leaving no detail out.

“Is he here now?” he asked, regarding the strange dark-haired man she told him about.

Mia took a quick look around but didn’t see him. She spotted the man from the cafe, moving carefully through the crowd with some sort of canister in his hand.

“No… But he’s gotta be here somewhere, right?” she asked, looking back at him.

“That I can’t be certain of. He doesn’t sound like anyone I know of.” He scratched the stubble on his chin. “It’s possible that he was the—”

A scream from behind her cut him off.

“What was that?” Mia asked, turning around to see where the screaming was coming from.
